Going MIA

So, I've been away. Again. This time however, I come back much the poorer, and not much really that much the wiser. I do however, now have a nice Oxford Brookes NUS card and a folder full of pieces of paper. Rock and roll.
The more observant of you will notice that, as a student I should be at a university drinking, sleeping, watching trisha, doing all the stuff that students do, but I'm clearly not. You see due to the cunning nature of the course I'm on, I'm actually going to be doing it working at a placement, in Ipswich, and then studying in Cambridge. Thus Oxford Brookes itself will only play a very small part of my life. Needless to say it's all very confusing.
Anyway to save you the hassle of remembering this, I've made a cut-out and keep card, that you can print off, cut-out, and indeed keep! Then whenever someone asks you, you can whip it out to remind you.

Mark "Sparticus" Walley

Will be in Ipswich, studying a degree in youth and community work and applied theology at Cambridge

Helen "Stetler" Irvine

Will be working for NGM just outside Bristol

And with that out of the way, I can finally go to bed.

Oh but if anyone can find out the pop/smtp mail address for all the oxford brookes e-mail addresses, it would be most appreciated.

oi student boy, you owe me 13 quid :)

sparticus

Good point. :D

David

it's amazing the number of people on the street who ask me where you are. and i used to be stood there with no idea. with this card i will walk down the street in complete confidence

stoobs

hahahaha. that was funny

Sebooo

pop.oxfordbrookes.com

probably

sparticus

I've checked all the generic ones, like pop.brookes.ac.uk, and pop3.brookes.ac.uk and so forth, but to no avail... I really want a trace program so I can trace back the address...

Sebooo

Back to what address?

sparticus

No, trace back the e-mail address, to the original sender, which'll be the pop/mail account on the brookes server.

Seboo

You can do this by viewing the properties of the email in the details tab. This will provide all server IP and sometimes DNS names used from the client to addresse

sparticus

It doesn't give me enough information unfortunately... But don't worry, i found a trace program that's given me the address of the pop thingy. I can't send through it for some reason, but i can receive, which is good enough for me.

Sebooo

Your an idiot. If it came from that server its an SMTP server. Not a Pop server. You complete pillock

stoobs

hahahaha, i love it when seb gets technical on our asses

sparticus

Oh which ever one, I don't know, both the pop and the smtp one were running from the server though, so that's okay.

Sebooo

Its either a pop server or an smtp server. It cannot be both as both will need a different IP address.

Look, all I know is when I looked at the e-mail header/details, it didn't give me either the pop or smtp thingy. So I wanted to trace it back, as the previous trace program I used traced back to the smtp server. However I found out the oxford brookes server by downloading a port scanning utility and scanning various sub-domains on the www.brookes.ac.uk website to see if port 115 (that's the smtp port) was open. Eventually I guessed one that was, and if I enter it in outlook for both the pop and smtp/ outgoing and ingoing parts it works. So in short, I don't know how or why it works, just it does, and seems to come from the same address

Benjamin

If you wait 2 weeks I could ask my friend from Brookes, you know, the one who says he knows you from SS but you don't remember him??!

I love Brookes, they try to make jokes about us but we consider them unworthy of even making jokes of, haha.

Sebooo

Port 25 is SMTP. Port 115 is not even POP3 - 110 is (109 for POP2).
115 is SFTP you burk.

sparticus

Haha, that was just a typo by me. I meant to type in 110.

Sebooo

Well 110 isnt SMTP though.

sparticus

Oh whatever, I couldn't remember what port or was or which one the port was. It's irrelevant to the story really.
