Sing to the Lord, with all of your heart

Why oh why is the vast majority of explictly Christian music rubbish? Not just rubbish in the "I don't like this style of music" sense, but rubbish in the "absolutely no-one likes this music" sense. It's shocking. Really. I'm sure if Christians concentrated on making music that tried to best express the glory of God and didn't concentrate on trying to make it sound hip and trendy we'd be writing the best music in the world ever. Instead we get out of date badly written rubbish. That's no way to sing about God.

What have you just been listening to? :)

Oh I agree utterly. Thats why I like Bach. But all that German sucks...

Alasdair

yeah, what exactly were u listening to to spark u into this rant?

nosila

but isnt worship all about praising God anyway? who cares how to do it, as long as its from the heart and is for God and delighting God, just go for it....

Katie

Aye ally, but He is like the Creator of the universe, He doesn't deserve some silly stupid music. He deserves the absolute best of our ability. Thats including our songwriting abilities so the words are actually meaningful and glorifying to God rather than just some stupid song that goes "I love you God" over and over again like some lovesick boy band fan and then trying to pass it off as worship.

Firstly I suppose I should clarify. I was listening to some dumb "updated" versions of Christmas Carols done in a "pop" style. I was shocked to discover the CD was released last year and produced in this country, as opposed to twenty years ago and produced in a parallel universe where mind blowing drugs have made everything sound wonderful.

Music made for corporate praise settings I'm generally easier on musically, but a lot harsher theologically. So like Katie said, any corporate praise song that is just "ooh don't we love God" repeatedly deserves lambasting (possibly, depending on what that word means), however musically I can be slightly more accepting if it sucks badly, because I understand that everyone needs to be able to sing it along, so some blandness is inevitable.

However Christian "pop" music shouldn't ever be bland. Why? Out of all the explicitly Christian albums I have heard I can only think of five that I like, and only one that I think is super incredibly special (Delirious - Glo).
Bring back the days of Classical music I say! Now they knew how to write amazing contempary music about God without it sounding really cheesey.

Matt

Switchfoot, Steve, dc Talk, Quench, Note for a Child, Fono, Pillar, etc. etc. ?

Sparticus

Cathy Burton, Delirous (x2, possibly three as I haven't heard the new one), Steve and Capstone. They are the only five albums that are explictly Christian yet not coporate praise music I like. I dare say there are others, I just haven't heard them, and I've listened to a fair number of Christian albums.

Alasdir

i disagree with the thought of switchfoot sounding crap

Katie

And I quite like DC Talk....

Benjamin

I love Delirious' new album!! You can download 2 of their songs from it for free, legally, from mp3.com or delirious.co.uk...

Sparticus

I didn't like the one switchfoot album I have heard, I wouldn't say it sucked, but it wouldn't fall into my list of Christian albums I recommend to a friend.

Matt

(Did I imply I didn't like that list of bands? I didn't mean to...)

Switchfoot's "New Way To Be Human" is great, as is dc Talk's "Supernatural". And Quench's "Afterglow". And albums by those bands I mentioned also. Next time you visit I'll have to play you some Quench...
